The more you smile the more confident and attractive you’ll feel. However, if you’re embarrassed by the look of your teeth and hide your smile constantly, you won’t be able to feel comfortable and break away from the “grumpy” image. A smile means a lot in today’s society and on a psychological level. That being said, the only thing that stands in your way to a beautiful smile is you – or your bad habits. It’s true that some people are blessed with stronger teeth compared to others, but everyone still has to put effort into taking care of their oral health if they want an attractive but also painless smile. If you want to see what habits are the main culprits for your stained teeth, tooth decay or gum issues, keep on reading.
• Irregular Teeth Brushing
This is an obvious mistake when oral health is concerned. You should brush your teeth at least twice a day, in the morning and in the evening. Failing to do so won’t only damage your teeth, but the bacteria can cause gum infections which in turn can pose a risk for other health issues as well. If you don’t brush your teeth, you simply can’t remove the plaque, stains or bacteria.
• Brushing Too Hard
This is another common bad habit that can wreck your teeth – literally. Putting a lot of pressure into brushing your teeth won’t make your teeth cleaner. This will only make them more brittle. Add crunchy food and lack of vitamins to this mixture and you can easily lose chunks of your teeth. Therefore, even if you’re in a hurry, it’s always better to be gentle with your teeth brushing. Also, choose a toothbrush with soft bristles.
• Grinding Your Teeth
You may not even be aware that you have this particular bad habit since it usually occurs at night when you sleep. Still, if you wake up with pain or discomfort in your jaw, you probably grind your teeth during the night. The main cause of this is stress. Teeth grinding can break and fracture your teeth. One of the solutions to this problem involves sleeping with a special mouth guard. Other solutions combat stress directly, with meditation, massages and other stress-relieving techniques.
Everyone probably already knows all the negative consequences when it comes to smoking. Smokers have a higher risk of cancer as well as lung and heart diseases.(1) However, smoking can affect your dental health as well. Painful mouth sores are only some of the possible negative consequences of smoking. This bad habit can cause your gum line to recede, bad breath, and yellow teeth stains. Not to mention that you can easily lose your teeth due to smoking.
• Using Your Teeth as a Tool
Teeth should be used for chewing food and speaking, not as a tool. However, not many people realize how dangerous it is to use your teeth to rip things or open a bottle, even occasionally. Practices like these can crack your teeth in an instant. According to one of the most renowned dentist clinics in Sydney, this is unacceptable if you’re at least one bit concerned about your dental health, or actually, want to have your own teeth.
If you’re guilty of some, or even all of the above-mentioned bad habits, it’s time to make a change. In this case, it’s not about your genetics – it’s about how you treat your teeth and gums. Just like you can see results on your body soon enough when you pick up healthy habits such as exercising and balanced diet, the effort you put into your dental health and hygiene will be well worth it.
